Pre-School

Pre-school centres are for children aged between 3 and 5. Most centres open for sessions of around 2 ½ hours in the morning and/or in the afternoons.

Pre-school centres offer Government funded places for the above sessions for 3 and 4 year olds. The Government funded places are only available during term time. Some pre-school providers offer wrap-around care (i.e. this is where additional hours can be added to the 2 ½ hour session for a fee).

In Moray we have 2 types of pre-school - Local Authority Nurseries which are based in Primary Schools and Partner Centres who are contracted by the Local Authority to offer 3 or 4 year old funded places on the Local Authority’s behalf. Partner Centres can be private businesses or voluntary organisations, which operate from community centres, village halls, private premises, etc.

Pre-school centres must be registered with the Care Inspectorate and are inspected by both the Care Inspectorate and HMIE (Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Education) on an annual basis.
